Michael Crystal is a partner at Spiteri & Ursulak, and holds a specialist certification from the Law Society of upper Canada in the area of criminal law.

 Currently, Mr. Crystal practices in the area of privacy class actions, trial and appellate advocacy, Supreme Court of Canada agency and regulatory law. Most recently, Mr. Crystal successfully argued R. v. Cody 2017 SCC 31, in the Supreme Court of Canada which dealt with the constitutional right to a trial in a reasonable time. He is also representing an indigenous intervener in the Energy East pipeline hearing as well as other complex litigation matters.

Mr. Crystal is a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa law school and co-hosts a weekly AM radio program entitled “Trial Talk” designed to explain the complexity of litigation to the public. He has written numerous articles on legal issues including advocacy, criminal law and Privacy. Mr. Crystal is a regular speaker at the Net Diligence international conference for insurance companies on cyber security (held annually in Toronto).

 Mr. Crystal is a member of numerous law – related associations and organizations and is currently a member of the Supreme Court of Canada rules committee.

 Mr. Crystal articled with the Atlantic law firm of Stewart McKelvey Sterling Scales and was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1992 and the Ontario bar in 1996. He then worked as a public defender for the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission from 1991 to 1995. He went on to work for Borden Ladner Gervais, Gowlings and Pinkofsky Lockyer before starting his own firm Crystal and Associates in 2001.

Mr. Crystal has worked primarily in the area of trial and appellate advocacy and appeared at all level of courts including lead counsel in the Supreme Court of Canada.
